A cellular Apple Watch sells for a little more at best, and most of what cellular cost new does not come back. Apple charged $100 more for GPS + Cellular on every aluminum Apple Watch from Series 5 to Series 12. As of September 30, 2026, Techtree pays $177 for a 42mm aluminum Series 12 with cellular in Good condition and $157 for the GPS model, so $20 of Apple's $100 is still there. A 42mm aluminum Series 10 in the same condition is worth $116 with cellular and $116 without.

- Before you ship a cellular watch, remove its plan when you unpair it and ask your carrier to cancel the line. Techtree cannot buy a watch with Activation Lock still on, one reported lost or stolen, or one with a balance still owed.

Apple's gap was $100 on every Series and $50 on both SE models. The last column is the cellular price minus the GPS price, so a negative figure would mean the GPS version is worth more. Every model we buy is also in our trade-in price index, at its best configuration.
How much of the cellular premium is left?
Because Apple's gap was the same $100 on every Series, the generations compare cleanly. Each bar shows how much of it the cellular model still carries in our price book, on the smaller case size.
Our reading of the price book (a judgment, not a rule):
- Even the newest watches keep only a fraction. The 42mm Series 12 keeps $20 and the 42mm Series 11 $18 of Apple's $100. On the Series 10 and older, the cellular and GPS versions of the same size are mostly within a few dollars of each other; the table shows each pair.
- 5G may be part of it; our prices cannot say. Apple says the Series 11 and later and the SE 3 can connect to 5G, while cellular models introduced in 2024 and earlier connect to 4G LTE and 3G. That lines up with where the premium sits today, but a price book records prices, not reasons.
- Condition and case matter far more. A 42mm aluminum Series 12 with cellular in Fair condition (deep scratches or dents) is worth $131, while the GPS model in Good condition is worth $157. The how we grade page has every condition's checklist.

Why compare aluminum only?
Because nothing else comes in both versions. Apple's identification page lists every titanium, stainless steel and ceramic version of the Series 5 to 12, and every Apple Watch Ultra, as GPS + Cellular only. If your watch has one of those cases, it is cellular, and there is no GPS twin to compare it with.
Case material also moves the price far more than cellular does. As of September 30, 2026, a 42mm Series 12 in Good condition is worth $361 in titanium and $177 in aluminum with cellular. How can you tell if a watch is cellular?
Three checks, all from Apple's own identification page:
- The model number. On the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then General, then About. Tap the Model Number field until it shows a number that starts with "A", then find it in the table below.
- The Digital Crown. Apple describes every GPS + Cellular aluminum model with a ring on the Digital Crown: red on the Series 5 to Series 9 and the SE (2nd generation), and a ring that matches the case on the Series 10, 11 and 12 and the SE 3. It describes the GPS versions without one.
- The case. On a Series 5 to 12, a titanium, stainless steel or ceramic case means cellular, and every Ultra is cellular.

Model numbers are for watches sold in North America, smaller case first. Watches sold in some other regions carry different numbers, all listed on Apple's identification page.
Our quote asks whether the watch is GPS or GPS + Cellular, so a minute with the model number makes sure you are quoted for the watch you have.
What should you do with the watch's plan?
Remove it, then cancel it. They are two separate steps, and the second one happens with your carrier, not on the watch:
- Unpair the watch from your iPhone. In the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch, then All Watches, then the info button next to the watch, then Unpair Apple Watch.
- Choose Remove Cellular Plan when asked. Apple's advice is plain: if you are selling or giving the watch away, remove the plan.
- Enter your Apple Account password. That turns off Activation Lock. Unpairing erases the watch and restores its factory settings, and your iPhone tries to make a backup of it.
- Contact your carrier to cancel the line. Removing the plan on the watch is not the same as cancelling it with the carrier, and Apple notes that carrier fees might apply. Skip this and you can keep paying for a watch you no longer own.
- Check Find My. Once unpaired, the watch should be gone from your devices at iCloud.com/find. If it is still listed, it may still be locked to your account, so remove it there before you ship.
There is no SIM card to take out: Apple says Apple Watch has no SIM slot. If you are moving the plan to a new watch instead, Apple's steps are to remove it from the old watch first and add it while you set up the new one; some carriers let you transfer it straight from the Apple Watch app.
Our price depends on whether the watch is GPS or GPS + Cellular, not on its plan, so there is no reason to keep a plan active for the sale. Already erased the watch, or no longer have the iPhone? What Techtree cannot buy
Cellular or not, Techtree cannot buy a watch with:
- Activation Lock still on. A watch still linked to your Apple Account cannot be bought, so the lock must be off before you ship. Unpairing with your password turns it off; how to reset an Apple Watch covers every method.
- A lost or stolen report.
- A balance still owed. A watch bought on a carrier or other payment plan must be paid off before you sell it.

Wear and damage change the grade, not the answer. Scratches, dents, a cracked display and a battery below 80 percent each map to a grade with its own price, so pick the one that matches and ship the watch as it is. Selling a cracked device shows what a cracked Apple Watch is worth.
Is Apple Watch cellular worth it?
If you are buying a new watch, pay for cellular because you will use it, not to get it back later. Apple sells it so the watch can make calls, reply to messages and get notifications while you are away from your iPhone. As of September 30, 2026, a 42mm aluminum Series 12 with cellular in Good condition brings back $20 of the $100 it cost extra, and most older Series bring back less. Our reading: if you would leave cellular switched off, the GPS model is the better buy both new and at resale. Apple's conditions are worth knowing too: the watch normally has to use the same carrier as your iPhone, pre-paid accounts are not currently supported, and 5G needs a Series 11 or later, an SE 3 or an Ultra 3 or later on a participating carrier.
If you want a titanium or ceramic Series 12, or an Ultra, you get cellular anyway, so the choice is made for you.

Is a cellular Apple Watch SE worth more? Not by much. As of September 30, 2026, a 40mm SE 3 in Good condition is worth $61 with cellular and $55 without, against the $50 more Apple charged for cellular.
Can I sell a cellular Apple Watch that is not paid off? No. Techtree cannot buy a watch with a balance still owed, just as it cannot buy one with Activation Lock on or one reported lost or stolen. Once it is paid off and unpaired, it sells as it is.
