AT&T won't unlock your phone? Every unlock error explained, and how to sell it locked

Active on another account, under 60 days, too many attempts, past due: AT&T's unlock errors stop an unlock, not a sale. Here is what each message means, which AT&T-locked phones Techtree buys as they are, and what each one is worth today.

AT&T won't unlock your phone? You do not need the unlock to sell it. Techtree buys AT&T-locked phones as they are: choose AT&T as the carrier in your quote, and a phone that AT&T refuses to unlock (for "active on another account", the 60-day rule, too many attempts and most other errors) can still be sold, as long as it is paid off, yours to sell, and not reported lost or stolen. As of September 23, 2026, Techtree pays up to $171 for an AT&T-locked iPhone 13 and up to $785 for an AT&T-locked iPhone 17 Pro Max in Good condition.

At a glance (Techtree, September 23, 2026):

  • Techtree buys AT&T-locked iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Google Pixel phones without an unlock. Choose AT&T in the quote.
  • An AT&T unlock denial for "active on another account", "under 60 days", "recently upgraded", "too many attempts", "already processing" or a prepaid time limit does not stop a sale to Techtree when the phone is paid off.
  • Techtree cannot buy a phone with an AT&T installment balance still owed, a phone AT&T flags as an "unpaid device", or one reported lost or stolen.
  • An AT&T-locked phone in Good condition sells to Techtree for about 76 to 98 percent of the unlocked price; older models such as the iPhone 12, 13 and 14 are at 95 to 98 percent.
  • Every Techtree quote is locked for 21 days and includes a free prepaid shipping label.

Is your phone actually AT&T-locked?

Check first. A phone you use on AT&T is not necessarily locked to AT&T, and choosing AT&T for a phone that is already unlocked costs you money.

  • iPhone: open Settings, General, About and find Carrier Lock. "No SIM restrictions" means it is unlocked: choose Unlocked in your quote. "SIM locked" means it is locked: choose AT&T.
  • Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel: check the device's lock status in your AT&T account, or try a SIM card from another carrier. If the other SIM works, the phone is unlocked.
  • IMEI: dial *#06# to see it. It is the number we use to check the phone when it arrives.

AT&T unlock errors: can you still sell it?

These are the messages AT&T's unlock portal shows, in AT&T's own words, and what each means for selling the phone to Techtree without the unlock.

AT&T says What it means Sell it to Techtree locked?
"The account owner needs to remove the device from their account first" (active on another AT&T account) The phone is still attached to someone's AT&T line, often the previous owner's Yes, if the phone is paid off and yours to sell
"after you've had your device for at least 60 days" (device sold date, 60-day rule) AT&T will not unlock a phone in its first 60 days Yes, if you bought it outright; no need to wait
Recently upgraded: wait "14 days after purchase" AT&T holds unlocks right after an upgrade Yes, if the old phone is paid off
"You've tried to enter your IMEI too many times" / try again "after 24 hours" Too many unlock attempts Yes, if the phone is paid off and not reported lost or stolen
"We're already processing an unlock request" A request is pending Yes, sell it now as AT&T-locked
"because of a past due balance on the account" The account has an unpaid bill Yes, if the phone itself has no installment balance
Prepaid: "12 months of paid AT&T service" AT&T Prepaid phones stay locked for a year Yes, prepaid phones are bought outright; no need to wait
Business or company account needs the company's permission The phone belongs to an employer's account Only if it is yours to sell, paid off and released from company management
"We're sorry, we can't unlock this device" (no reason given) AT&T declined without a stated reason Yes, if the phone is paid off and not reported lost or stolen
"because AT&T did not sell or activate it" / not an AT&T device The phone is not locked to AT&T Yes, but choose its real carrier, or Unlocked
"This device is already unlocked" Nothing to unlock Yes, choose Unlocked for the higher price
"You can't unlock your device until your installment plan is paid off" An AT&T installment balance remains No, pay the balance off first, then sell it locked
"Unpaid device": linked to another account "with an active AT&T Installment Plan" Someone else still owes on the phone, and AT&T warns it "may be blocked" No, not until that balance is paid
"has been reported as lost or stolen" The IMEI is blocked, and AT&T tells other providers No

Messages checked on AT&T's device unlock portal and support pages on September 23, 2026. "Yes" means the unlock denial itself does not stop a sale to Techtree; the phone still has to meet our seller requirements: paid off, yours to sell, not reported lost or stolen, and signed out of your Apple or Google account.

What does "active on another account" mean?

This is the error people search most, and it usually hits someone who bought a used AT&T phone, or who moved a line between accounts. AT&T will not unlock a phone that is still attached to another AT&T customer's line.

You do not need to fix it to sell the phone. If the phone is fully paid off and it is yours, choose AT&T in your Techtree quote and sell it as it is.

The one case to watch: if that other account still has an installment plan on the phone, AT&T shows an "unpaid device" message instead, and warns that the phone may be blocked. AT&T's installment agreement gives it a security interest in a financed phone and lets it disable the device if payments stop. That phone is not sellable to Techtree until the balance is paid.

The AT&T 60-day rule (device sold date)

AT&T only unlocks a postpaid phone after you have had it for at least 60 days, and asks you to wait 14 days after an upgrade. Those waits matter for an unlock, not for a sale. If you bought the phone outright, you can sell it to Techtree as AT&T-locked today, without waiting out the 60 days.

Can you sell an AT&T Prepaid phone?

AT&T Prepaid phones stay locked until they have 12 months of paid service. Because a prepaid phone is bought outright, there is no balance to clear: choose AT&T in your quote and sell it locked, whenever you like.

Techtree prices checked September 23, 2026, in USD, from each model's configuration table. "Up to" is the best storage option for each carrier; the share is the AT&T figure divided by the unlocked figure, rounded. Prices change daily. Every phone we buy is on our iPhone, Samsung and Google Pixel pages, and the trade-in price index lists every model.

On the iPhone 12, 13 and 14, an AT&T lock costs just $2 to $12 against the unlocked price. On newer models the lock is priced in, and you still do not need to unlock the phone to sell it: the AT&T price is the quote.

Damaged too? An AT&T-locked phone with a cracked screen or a battery below 80 percent still sells: see our guide to selling a phone with a cracked screen.

How to sell your AT&T-locked phone

  1. Open your model from the table above (AT&T is preselected), or find it on our phone buyback page and choose AT&T as the carrier.
  2. Choose the storage and condition. The price appears right away and is locked for 21 days. Accept it and we email you a free prepaid shipping label.
  3. Sign out and ship. Turn off Find My (iPhone) or remove your Google Account (Android) before you ship. The lock that matters for a sale is the account lock, not the carrier lock; our guide to selling a locked phone shows how to clear it.

When the phone arrives we check its IMEI and inspect it against our grading standards. If it matches your quote, we pay the locked price. If AT&T unlocks the phone before you ship it, edit the item on your order page and change the carrier to Unlocked; the order shows the new offer before you confirm.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell an AT&T-locked phone? Yes. Techtree buys AT&T-locked phones as they are, as long as the phone is paid off, yours to sell, and not reported lost or stolen. Choose AT&T in your quote.

Do I have to unlock my AT&T phone before selling it? No. You do not need an unlock to sell to Techtree. The AT&T price on each model page already accounts for the lock.

What does "active on another account" mean on AT&T? The phone is still attached to another AT&T customer's line, so AT&T will not unlock it. If the phone is paid off and yours, you can still sell it to Techtree as AT&T-locked.

Can I sell my AT&T phone before 60 days? Yes, if you bought it outright. The 60-day rule applies to AT&T unlocks, not to selling the phone.

AT&T says I tried to unlock too many times. Can I still sell it? Yes, if the phone is paid off and has not been reported lost or stolen. The attempt limit only affects AT&T's unlock portal.

Can I sell an AT&T phone that is not paid off? No. Techtree needs the installment balance paid first. Once it is paid off, you can sell it while it is still locked to AT&T.

Can I sell an AT&T Prepaid phone before 12 months? Yes. Prepaid phones are bought outright, so there is no balance to clear. Choose AT&T in your quote.

How much is an AT&T-locked iPhone worth? As of September 23, 2026, Techtree pays up to $171 for an AT&T-locked iPhone 13, $366 for an iPhone 16 and $785 for an iPhone 17 Pro Max in Good condition, about 76 to 98 percent of the unlocked price depending on the model.

What if AT&T says my phone is lost or stolen? Techtree cannot buy it. A lost or stolen block stops the phone working on every participating network, and only the account that reported it can ask AT&T to remove the block.

My phone got unlocked after I placed my order. What now? Before you ship it, edit the item on your order page and change the carrier to Unlocked. The order shows the new offer before you confirm.
